Full Description: Cactus species Trichocereus thelegonus Has a large fragrant, nocturnal 6" to 8"+ diameter white colored bloom. Stem growth is dark green averaging 2-1/2" to 3-1/2" diameter with protruding bumps at aerioles points along ribs, 12 to 13 ribs. Spines; 1 central spines but occasionally 2, averaging 1-1/4" up to 2"+ long, dark brown to grayish colored, central spines usually fall off with age. 5 to 8 radial spines, grayish colored, shorter averaging up to 1" inch long. Aerioles are white cotton like .

Trichocereus thelegonus can grow up to 10' feet long if given support but seldom grows taller than 3' to 4' feet tall before falling over and sprawling on the ground. It can re-root itself into the ground and often in its native habitat has a sprawling growth form.

Synonyms : Trichocereus thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus.

Native To : Argentina in the provinces of Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy. It grows from 500 to 1,200 m.

Flower/ Fruits : Large white colored nocturnal blooms with yellow-greenish to maroon/bronze back petals. Stigma and anthers are cream colored. Greenish throat. Blooms are slightly fragrant. Fruits; Trichocereus thelegonus has roundish 2-1/4" diameter fruit with reddish brown hairs on the exterior of the fruit. The fruit skin is reddish in color. Self-sterile Trichocereus thelegonus needs pollen from other plants to produce viable seed.

More Info. : Trichocereus Thelegonus was scientifically reclassified/re-named into the Echinopsis genus and is now recognized scientifically as Echinopsis thelegona.
