Full Description:

Succulent species Euphorbia ingens cv 'CHOCOLATE DROP' A cactus like tree similar in growth form to the species Euphorbia ingens, but this is a cultivar known as ‘Chocolate Drop’, so named for the large oval chocolate brown spine shields along the margins of the 4-angled stems. Spine shields are pinkish-rose when new, turning to chocolate brown with age. it eventually will grow into a large multi-branched tree with small bright yellow blooms no more than 1/2" diameter and small leaves along stem rib edges that fall off in winter (deciduous). The stem tips often get ballon shaped near tops. Euphorbia ingens can eventually grow to approx. 35' feet (12m) tall.

The branches are segmented with spines running along the ridges of the segments. It produces small, greenish yellow flowers on the ridges of the topmost segment of every branch from autumn to winter. The fruit, a round 3-lobed capsule, turns red to purple when ripening. Makes an attractive drought tolerant landscape plant.

Synonym; Euphorbia similis A.Berger (1907).

Common names: Candelabra Tree, (Eng.); naboom, gewone naboom (Afr.); mohlohlokgomo, mokgoto (Northern Sotho); unHlonhlo (Sw); Nkondze, Nkonde (Tswana).

Native to: Southern Africa/ South Africa-regions; KwaZulu-Natal, Swaziland, Limpopo Province, Gauteng, North-West Province, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and further into tropical Africa.

Caution: All parts of Euphorbia Ingens cv 'CHOCOLATE DROP' are poisonous if ingested. Also handling the milky latex inside the stems can be extremely poisonous, and a dangerous irritant. Handling the exterior of Euphorbia Ingens may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction with some people who are especially sensitive or have allergic reactions.

Care; Easy to care for Euphorbia ingens cv 'Chocolate Drop' likes part-shade when young or some stem scaring will occur in full sun, adaptable to full sun in cooler coastal areas though. Give plenty of water in summer and little in winter. Can be very draught tolerant when well established. Likes loose well draining soil or container plant in rich-loose potting soil. Hardy to 30f for brief periods.

More info: The species name ingens means huge.
