PVC Greenhouse under contruction

Postby Matt » Sat Apr 07, 2012 10:45 am

Heres a picture of a PVC greenhouse that i have not finished yet, still working on the doors, needs plastic cover and shade cloth too. Doors would be better if it was overall much wider as the arch would not be as sharp but they have to be wide enough to get a standard ground cover flat thru the door. Once finished tables will line the left and right sides 2ft wide the whole length. Irrigation also will be installed. Fairly easy to build the arches are slid over 1/2" rebar hammered into the ground about 1ft to 18" with arches every 4'. With pvc, rebar, presure treated wood, plastic 6mil and shade cloth the total material cost is around $300 to $400 to build. This one will be a bit more once finished as instead of shade cloth drapped over it will be suspended with a lightwieght galvanized pre-fab structure over head. Plus the irrigation parts cost. It will be used primarily for new crosses of Epiphyllum.

Are you creating an area of higher humidity for small seedlings?

Thanks Pat,
Were in a little valley surrounded by mountains with more to the right (not seen in picture) a little farther away but higher.

Hi Steve,
Higher humidity it will have especially with spray nozzles on each table they could be watered for a minute 5 times a day if need be but not the main reason for the greenhouse. The main reason is harvest time is usually around October to January and the nights can get to 32 or slightly below so in summer both doors will be open for airflow and irrigation sprays come on a few times a day but only briefly. In winter both doors will be closed and i may add a small heat device in center-not sure but probably this will be enough cold protection. The new seeds tend to germinate easily but there tender after that until 1 yr to 2yrs old or until they make a normal flat stem or 3 angle growth like most Epis have, then there much hardier and need no protection. Were fairly mild weather here but do get cold nights in winter, days are usually 60-70 in winter but daylight is short so as soon as sun goes down it gets cold in winter, this last winter there were 4 frost warnings. No wind chill in the greenhouse either.
