Full Description: Epiphyllum Hybrid-(Ackermanni Sport) 'ROTE FEDER' Has a Medium to Large bloom in red to scarlet. Inner petals often with narrow purple edges. Sepals and petals deeply incised and look like feathers. Thick flat and triangular growth-simular in growth to cv 'Ackermanni hybridus' but a different bloom form. Flower lasts 3-5 days. (Name means ‘Red Feather’ in German). Registered by Adam Oestreicher this variety is an ‘Ackermannii Hybridus’ Sport. Reg. #10083

NOTES; Not as vigorous a grower as 'Ackermanni hybridus', likes more frequent soil mix changes and seems to perform better in warmer summer weather so likes the heat, can have setbacks in winter. Not a shy bloomer though.

Whats a SPORT and how did 'ROTE FEDER' become one? Suppose you have a perticular hybrid cultivar or even a species, and it gets a stem that produces either different growth than the parent or blooms, then that (sport stem) is removed and rooted on its own (cloned), and continues to show this change in appearance. That stem then becomes to be called a SPORT.

Several hybridizers have used 'ROTE FEDER' as a cross to obtain the feather edged qualities in new seedlings but few if any have had any luck so far, but only time will tell.

( Below is another picture of 'ROTE FEDER' in bloom grown by another hybridizer.)
