Full Description: Species Opuntia robusta - Also commonly named Giant Silver Dollar Opuntia. Grows pads from 10" diameter up to 20" inches wide with large roundish shaped pads. Blooms are yellow and come from the tips of pads in warm months. Tender new pad growth is edible along with the fruit which can be eaten in hand after pealing exterior or cutting in half can also be made into jam. Mature pads have long spines. The fruit will attract many species of birds who also enjoy eating the fruit, so harvest as soon as fruit ripens. Fruit is ripe when dark purplish in color and soft to touch.

Fruit; The fruit of Opuntia robusta is delicious, very juicy too! Fruit ripens around July for the first flush, then you can have a second flush around August/Sept. The fruit is very sweet and is excellent in fruit smoothies or for margaritas. The fruit is sweet/juicy and has a grape like taste. Fruits or cactus apples are oval in shape and average 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" in diameter by 3-1/2" to 4" long.

Edible stems; Not only is the fruit edible but the stems or nopale pads are also edible in nopales salad. You skin the exterior and boil the stem flesh which is cut into narrow strips. The strips are then added to a fresh salad. High in nutrients and low in calories too, so very healthy!

Care; Easy to grow Opuntia robusta is drought tolerant requiring very little water once established. Opuntia robusta makes a great landscape plant or barrier if planted along a fence closely spaced, about 1 plant or rooted stem every 6ft. Individual plants can spread over 6ft wide in a very short time if not trimmed back. Can grow over time if not cut back/pruned into a very large clump. Roots easily from separated/individual pads. Once established Opuntia robusta can tolerate temps at 20 degrees but only for brief periods.

Offered as; A ready to root single un-rooted cutting or pad for mail order to all locations, also available as large 5gal plant(s) with established roots (pick up at location only for 5gal plant(s) due to size/weight.)
