|Full Description: Cactus species Myrtillocactus geometrizans is a large shrubby cactus eventually growing up to 15' tall, with candelabra-like multi-branching on mature plants. The individual stems of Myrtillocactus geometrizans are a green-bluish color average 2-1/2" to 4"+ in diameter, with five to occasionally six ribs, with areoles spaced 3/4" to 1-1/2" apart. There is an average of 3 to 5 spines in each areole but occasionally a few more. Relatively fast growing Myrtillocactus geometrizans can make for both an attractive and drought tolerant landscape plant. This cactus also produces edible fruit-see below.
Common Names : Bilberry Cactus, Blue Candle, Blue Flame, Blue Myrtle cactus, Garambullo, Whortleberry Cactus.
Synonyms : Cereus geometrizans, Cereus pugioniferus, Myrtillocactus geometrizans var. pugionifera, Myrtillocactus pugionifer, Myrtillocactus grandiareolatus
Native to : Central and northern Mexico in Oaxaca, Puebla, Tamaulipas. This species actually has formed forests in some areas of the Chihuahuan desert.
Flowers : Are small 3/4" to 1" diameter white to creamy white with light green overcast on back petals. Buds are brownish-maroon.
Fruit : The fruit is edible, small 3/4" diameter roundish dark purple berry. Blooms profusely at 3'ft. or taller. The fruit resembles the Vaccinium myrtillus aka the (Bilberry or Whortleberry) fruit as there commonly known, so both the botanical and common names were derived from this resemblance. The fruit is often sold in markets with in Mexico.

Care : Myrtillocactus Geometrizans likes semi-rich good draining soil and ample water in summer until well established then occasional water in summer. Little to no water in winter, keep on the dry side in winter. Can have stem damage to apex if temps below 32 degrees in winter. Part shade for small young plants but once well established does well in full sun.
