|Full Description: Cactus species variety Lophocereus schottii variety monstrose Has stem growth that is unusual with pronounced triangular shaped tubercles that are irregular, often protruding at slightly varying angles. Stem growth is green-gray in color averaging 3" to 6" inches in diameter, almost completely spineless. Older specimens can grow up to 25' feet tall. Slow growing. Drought tolerant. Very interesting landscape plant with its unusual stem growth.

Native To : Lophocereus schottii the non-monstrose species (Also linked below for reference) is found in both Arizona and Mexico, Arizona-only on the southern edge of the state and Mexico-both the mainland and the Baja peninsula, but this monstrous form is only found in a small area NE of El Arco, about halfway down the Baja peninsula in Mexico. This monstrose form is considered sterile and is duplicated from stem cuttings.
Flowers : The non-monstrose species form has pinkish white flowers, but this monstrose variety rarely blooms and besides the possibility of abnormal seeds from the species propagating it is primarily duplicated by vegetative cuttings.
More Info. : There is another similar form of this monstrose species but with thinner stem growth named Lophocereus schottii form monstrose Variety minor "mieckleyanus". To differentiate the two as both are very similar this variety is often referred to as Variety "major" or Lophocereus Schottii Var. Monstrose-(major). Another monstrose variation is spiraled or 'Spiralis'.
