Full Description: Succulent species Euphorbia ammak is a tree-like Euphorbia that can eventually reach up to 20' tall, several branches or arms grow from the main stems. Individual stems average 3" to 4" inches in diameter with dark green colored skin and wavy rib edges with serrated spine like or thorny edges. Near the tops of stems lime green colored lancelet shaped leaves emerge in the warm growing season. Very drought tolerant once established. An attractive and interesting landscape plant. Can be ground planted in frost free locations or grown as a house plant in cold locations.

Native To : Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Synonyms : There are no synonyms for this species/name. There is a variegated version though under the same name followed by "Variegata" or Euphorbia ammak-veriegated.

Common Names : African Candelabra, Spurge

Flowers/ Fruit : Grown primarily for its foliage as a landscape plant Euphorbia ammak has small insignificant yellow-green flowers followed by non edible greenish fruit.

More Info. : Euphorbia ammak is a species of plant in the Euphorbiaceae family. Although native to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, it is common in southern Africa where it was introduced long ago by traders, but Euphorbia ammak is now listed as a threatened species in its native habitat.

There is also a variegated form of Euphorbia ammak with similar growth characteristics but has greyish-green stem coloring.

Like most species in the Euphorbia genus the milky white sap is poisonous and can irritate eyes, so wash hands well after trimming stems or handling them.

Care : Euphorbia ammak likes full sun to some part-shade and semi-rich good draining soil mix. Requiring very little water once established, it is not tolerant of wet conditions, particularly during winter months. In cold locations it can easily be grown in a container as a houseplant or moved indoors during the winter season. Hardy to 32 degrees but only for very brief periods.
