|Full Description: Cactus species monstrose Eulychnia castanea var. spiralis forma variety spiralis discoidal form or (disc shaped form) resembles small green donuts stacked one upon another, very unusual monstrose form. Stem growth is light to dark green colored and averages 1-1/2" to 2-1/4"+ in diameter by 3'+ft. tall over several seasons. Slow to gain any height taking several seasons to obtain a large specimen sized plant. Long brownish colored spines appear at segments later turning greyish colored with age. This variety is very unusual and is sure to start a conversation in the cactus and succulent garden, patio or atrium.
Synonyms : Eulychnia mostruosa v. spiraliforme, Eulychnia aurata f. monstrosa cristata, Eulychnia spiralis, Eulychnia varispiralis.
Origin : This variety originated from nursery grown stock and mutated stems were then copied/ cloned.
Care : Eulychnia Castanea Var. Spiralis like full sun by cooler coastal areas to part shade inland in summer. Rich good draining soil mix. Protect from winter frosts, can tolerate brief temps overnight slightly below 32 degrees but grows optimally at 75 to 95 degrees. This variety can not tolerate low temps for prolonged periods during winter, reduce watering in winter.
