Full Description: Cactus species Espostoa ruficeps is a very slow growing tree-like cactus species, Espostoa ruficeps produces noticeable amounts of growth each year if kept well fed and watered throughout the warmest months, particularly if it has been acclimatize to accept full sun. Once this cactus is established it can easily produce 7" to 8" inches of growth every year. Most plants will offset readily, and clumps can be produced in a few years. It will fill a large pot in time however, so space is needed if it is to show of its best. Be careful in winter months not to over water as this species is very susceptible to rot in winter.

Synonyms : Espostoa lanata ruficeps

Native to : Peru-in the locality of Ancash.

More info. : Espostoa ruficeps is one of the species in the genus of Espostoa which are columnar type cacti, Espostoa comprises 16 species known from the Andes of southern Ecuador and Peru. It usually lives at an altitude of between 800m and 2500m or 2625' to 8,200' feet in elevation . Its fruit is edible, sweet, and juicy.

The genus is named after Nicolas E. Esposto, a renowned botanist from Lima, Peru.

In adulthood, a cephalium sometimes appears, similar to the Mexican genus Cephalocereus.

The species of Espostoa were discovered by Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland in the early nineteenth century.

They are appreciated for their decorative qualities due to their white fleece, often used during holidays to make a Santa Cactus.

Espostoa ruficeps has a white colored nocturnal blooming flower.

Espostoa ruficeps is closely related to Espostoa lanata.
