Full Description: Cactus species Echinopsis peruviana aka Trichocereus peruvianus commonly named Peruvian Torch Cactus, is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the western slope of the Andes in Peru. It has bluish-green colored stem growth, with frosted stems and 6-9 broadly rounded ribs. Large, white nocturnal flowers. Echinopsis peruviana can grow up to 20' ft. tall, with stems averaging 3-1/2" to 8" inches in diameter. Growth form is fully erect when young, but later can possibly arch over, or even becoming prostrate. It has Groups of 6-8 honey-colored to brown rigid spines, up to 4 spines can be 1-1/2" in length but most are about 1/2" and located at the nodes, which are evenly spaced along the ribs, up to approximately 1" inch apart. Echinopsis peruviana also contains the psychoactive alkaloid mescaline as well as other alkaloids similar to another species from Peru Trichocereus panchanoi. Echinopsis peruviana is an attractive columnar landscape plant that is also draught tolerant once established.

Native To : Peru- western slopes of the Andes between about 6,600'9,800' ft. above sea level.

More Info : The subspecies 'peruviana' has 6-8 ribs and notches over the areoles. The subspecies 'puquiensis' has 8-10 ribs and no notches over the areoles. Both have 9-10 inch fragrant white flowers.

Care : Echinopsis peruviana is easy to grow, give rich good draining soil, water regularly in summer to occasionally in winter. Hardy to 20 degrees for brief periods. Zone 9a and up outside or can be grown indoors/green housed.
