|Full Description: Cactus species Echinocereus pensilis is a cylindrical in form cactus that grows best as a hanging basket type plant but can be staked upright also. Stems average 1-1/4" to almost 2" on older growth and can grow several feet long. Individual stems have an average of 8 to 10 low, rounded and tuberculate ribs with aerioles 3/8" to 3/4" apart, spines at first appear yellow then turn reddish as they age with 1 central 3/8" to 3/4" long and 6 to 10 radial spines, older growth more. Pretty orange to reddish flowers tubular flower appear in spring to summer on tips of stems and average 2 to 2-3/4" long by 1-1/2" to 2" in diameter. An unusual hanging basket or sprawling plant in the drought tolerant garden.

Notes : Echinocereus pensilis is more commonly known and often sold under its older name; Morangaya pensilis, named in honor of two well known American collectors, Ed Gay and Reid Moran.
Echinocereus pensilis is fairly rare in cultivation, but not a difficult species to grow, flowers easily too. Echinocereus pensilis likes full sun, regular water from March to October. Can be somewhat rot
prone in winter, so does needs good drainage, likes to be kept in a cool place during winter rest. Echinocereus pensilis can briefly tolerate temp. as low as 32 f but not for prolonged periods if keep very dry, but without some cooler winter evenings in the 30-40s Echinocereus pensilis normally will not set many flower buds. Cascading, clustering in form, a great choice for a hanging display type plant. Stems may possibly become purple and limp in winter, but growth and color returns as soon as temps warm in early spring.
