|Full Description: Cactus species Cleistocactus winteri also previously classified as Hildewintera aureispina and commonly called; ("Golden Rat Tail Cactus"). Has small tubular orange-red to salmon blooms with purple anthers from spring thru summer months. Growth is also very interesting & attractive with rope like-(cylindrical) stems that have several hair like golden-yellow spines. The stems actually have 16 to 17 ribs but the growth is somewhat narrow making it cylindrical. The stems average 1" to 1-1/4" diameter and are pendant in form, making Cleistocactus winteri an excellent choice for growing in a hanging basket.
Other Syn; Loxanthocereus aureispinus, Winterocereus aureispinus, Borzicactus aureispinus, Winteria aureispina & Cleistocactus aureispinus.
Care : Easy to care for Cleistocactus winteri likes bright light with a little bit of shade provided mid-day. Rich well draining soil mix similar to hybrid Epiphyllum soil mix. Water well giving time to partially dry out in between watering s from spring threw summer. In winter Cleistocactus winteri is semi-dormant and requires less water. The long cylindrical stems are pendant so planting in a hanging basket is best. Cleistocactus winteri's stems can reach up to 5' to 6' feet (1.524-1.829 m) in length over several growing seasons.
More Info. : Originally named after Hildegarda Winter until re-classified as Cleistocactus winteri. Hildegarda Winter (1893-1975) was the sister of Friedrich Ritter prominent expert who discovered several cacti species. Cleistocactus winteri has been used extensively as a cross to create many Hildewintera hybrid varieties.
